    Bone Marrow Aspiration & Cytology

    Bone Marrow Cytological Examination

    BMAC

Bone Marrow Aspiration & Cytology is a diagnostic procedure used to obtain a liquid sample of bone marrow for examination under a microscope. The procedure helps in the evaluation of cellular components within the bone marrow, providing insights into blood cell production, abnormalities, and various hematological conditions.

    • Bone Marrow Aspiration & Cytology is a crucial tool for diagnosing and characterizing various hematological disorders, including leukemia, lymphoma, and myelodysplastic syndromes.
    • Cytological examination allows for the identification of abnormal cell types, assessment of cellularity, and evaluation of the overall health of the bone marrow.
    • The procedure is often part of the comprehensive evaluation of patients with unexplained anemia, leukopenia, or thrombocytopenia.

    Test Parameters

    1 - Aspiration

The aspiration component involves drawing a liquid sample of bone marrow using a thin needle, allowing for the examination of cellular elements, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.

    2 - Cytology

The cytology component involves the microscopic examination of the bone marrow aspirate to identify and characterize cells, detect abnormal cell types, and assess the overall cellular composition of the bone marrow.

    Sample Collection

The procedure is performed by a healthcare provider in a clinical setting. A local anesthetic is typically used to minimize discomfort.

Collection Method : Bone Marrow Aspiration & Cytology

Turn Around Time : Results are typically available within a few days after the bone marrow aspirate is collected and cytological examination is performed.

    Preparation

Patients undergoing Bone Marrow Aspiration & Cytology may receive specific pre-procedure instructions from the healthcare provider, including fasting or medication adjustments.

    This Test is Used For

    • Diagnosis of hematological disorders
    • Assessment of bone marrow health

    Risks

The procedure involves minimal risks, including pain or discomfort at the aspiration site. Serious complications are rare.

    • Patients may experience temporary soreness at the aspiration site.
    • There may be a small risk of bleeding or infection, but these complications are uncommon.
