    AFP (Alpha-Fetoprotein) Test

    Alpha-Fetoprotein Blood Test

The AFP (Alpha-Fetoprotein) Test is a diagnostic blood test used to measure the levels of alpha-fetoprotein in the bloodstream. Alpha-fetoprotein is a protein produced by the liver and yolk sac of a developing fetus. Abnormal levels of AFP in the blood may indicate various conditions, including liver diseases, certain cancers, and neural tube defects in the developing fetus.

    • The AFP Test is commonly used as a screening tool during pregnancy to assess the risk of neural tube defects in the developing fetus.
    • Elevated AFP levels may warrant further diagnostic tests to determine the underlying cause.
    • Results should be interpreted by a healthcare provider in conjunction with other clinical information for accurate diagnosis and appropriate follow-up.
